The text of the book Best Sermons 1926 is in the public domain.

  1. The copyright record (reproduced below) shows that the book Best Sermons 1926 was published on September 30, 1926.
  2. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Circular 15A states “Under the law in effect before 1978, copyright was secured either on the date a work was published or on the date of registration if the work was registered in unpublished form.”
  3. So copyright for Best Sermons 1926 was secured on September 30, 1926.
  4. The “Renewals Recorded” column of the copyright record is blank, so the copyright was not renewed.
  5. Circular 15A goes on to state that “If not renewed, the copyright expired at the end of the first 28-year term.”
  6. Therefore, the copyright expired at the end of the 28 years that started September 30, 1926, that is to say, on September 29, 1954.
  7. The “Philosophy” section of the Free Software Foundation website defines “public domain” as follows:

Sometimes people use the term “public domain” in a loose fashion to mean “free” or ”available gratis.” However, “public domain” is a legal term and means, precisely, “not copyrighted”. For clarity, we recommend using “public domain” for that meaning only, and using other terms to convey the other meanings.

  8. So, since the copyright has expired, the text of the book Best Sermons 1926 is in the public domain.
